Why Burdah Rock Bridge
Burdah Rock Bridge: A Signature Adventure in Wadi Rum
We’ve climbed Burdah Rock Bridge more times than we can count—and yet, the view always takes our breath away. Sitting on the bridge feels like reconnecting with yourself. It’s a moment of calm, freedom, and awe that never fades. This hike is one of the most rewarding experiences in all of Wadi Rum.
The Drive to Jabal Burdah: A Journey Worth Savoring
Jabal Burdah lies around 20 km southeast of Rum village and is easily reached by jeep. The drive takes about 40 to 50 minutes at a relaxed pace, allowing you to enjoy the shifting colors of the desert, from deep reds to golden sands, and the sculpted sandstone mountains along the way.
The Mountain of Cool Breezes
Burdah is located in the southeast of the Wadi Rum protected area. On its northern ridge stands the famous Burdah Rock Bridge, rising 35 meters high. It’s one of the tallest natural arches in the world, and certainly one of the most iconic landmarks in Wadi Rum.
Other well-known natural rock bridges in the desert include:
- Little Bridge
- Umm Fruth Rock Bridge
But Burdah remains the most dramatic and challenging to reach.
Hiking & Scrambling to the Bridge
There are a few paths to reach the arch, but our favorite is the “Bedouin Route” on the mountain’s north side. This trail is about 2 km long and takes roughly 3 hours round trip. It’s moderately difficult, involving some scrambling and use of hands on steeper sections—and occasionally, a rope for safety.
We’ll guide and support you throughout the climb, showing you our favorite viewpoints along the way. If you’re reasonably fit and enjoy a little challenge, this hike is perfect. However, it’s not recommended for those who fear heights or have difficulty with balance.
Nature & Bedouin Knowledge
Along the trail, we’ll point out native desert plants that we Bedouins have used for generations as natural remedies. You’ll hear their names, uses, and the stories behind them.
An Unforgettable View from the Top
Once on the bridge, the panoramic views over the red and yellow sands and distant mountains are simply breathtaking. It’s possible to hike to the very top of the mountain for a 360° view, but this extension adds several hours and includes a 20-meter abseil to descend—so we rarely include it in regular tours. We usually return via a different scenic Bedouin path.
Ready for the Climb?
If you’re looking for a true desert adventure, the Burdah Rock Bridge hike will be a highlight of your time in Wadi Rum. Let us guide you to one of the most beautiful spots in the Jordanian desert—where nature, silence, and freedom come together.
